Baby, You’re A Perfect Ten: The Birth of Dulcinea

In what could arguably be called the longest gestation ever known to man, Dulcinea was conceived in the heart of a shy and depressingly sedentary girl more than fifteen years before the night she was born. Let there be no mistake: I have always loved to dance. Always. But overweight in fourth grade and morbidly obese by middle school, the idea of doing it anywhere outside the safety of my house was terrifying. I’d gone line dancing a few times … Continue reading

SpinFest Over Time

I can still remember my first SpinFest: April 19th of 2008. A friend had brought me there to try to show me a good time. What could be more fun than playing in a park with toys and interesting new people? We were a much smaller group back then (probably around 12 or so), but the love of play and the spirit of imparting our skill toy knowledge has always been there. I was terrified. I stood there watching … Continue reading

Hazards of the Stilting Lifestyle

Starchild Stilts has been one of my circus inspirations, and several of our crew have gotten the chance to work with her when she came to Texas. She showed me what a stiltwalker can be and trained me to fall without hurting myself badly. She’s taken a nasty fall that she couldn’t prevent, and she is facing surgery for a broken wrist and 4 months of recuperation without her main source of income. If your life or your fancy has … Continue reading

Dances with YouTube

Thanks to my involvement with the Open Stage project, I receive a fair amount of email from YouTube. At first my “penpal” was somewhat aloof and stuck only to professional topics; notifying me about the odd channel subscription or comment on our ever-evolving online video archive. Over time, our relationship has truly blossomed, and now YouTube speaks pretty openly about its feelings. In point of fact, we seem to be having a bit of a tiff at the moment. The … Continue reading
